Editing lessons from tradies #3

(with apologies to all the excellent tradies out there).

What's wrong with this sentence?

'Today, it's wet ,cold and raining.'

Did you notice that misplaced comma? Can you shut your eyes (yes, right now, please!) and describe the weather in my exact words? Do you even care, or is that misplaced comma still front of mind?

Rather like the image of our unfortunate carpenter's work, you skip over the space before the comma (or the upside-down banister rail) – but be sure that it will bug your brain!

This will make you lose concentration and perhaps comprehension of what you are reading.

It's the small details that we often skim across that editors hone in on to make sure your readers keep reading!
